A starting number is useful. The assumptions matter.

One customer call used one portable toilet for every 50 guests as an initial event recommendation. That conversation also considered access to a household restroom. It was not a universal rule for all events or a legal capacity limit.

Using only that starting ratio, 50 guests suggests 1 unit, 100 suggests 2, and 150 suggests 3. For 125 guests, 125 ÷ 50 is 2.5, rounded up to 3 units. Bring the result to the rental conversation, then review the actual event.

Five details that can change the recommendation

  • Duration: a brief gathering and an all-day event create different demand.
  • Peak attendance: people arriving together can create a queue even if the daily total is modest.
  • Food and drinks: explain the plan rather than applying an unsupported automatic percentage.
  • Other restrooms: count only facilities guests will actually be allowed to use.
  • Layout and service: separated activity areas and multi-day use need a separate review.

Work through an Arvada backyard example

Suppose you plan a four-hour gathering for 100 guests in Allendale. The call-derived ratio starts at 2 units. Tell the team whether the house bathroom is available, drinks will be served and guests need an accessible facility. Do not automatically subtract a unit just because an indoor bathroom exists.

Accessibility is a separate planning step

For events subject to applicable ADA requirements, review the number and arrangement of restroom clusters, appropriate units and usable routes. A 21-unit cluster gives 2 units when the five-percent calculation is rounded upward. Read the accessible restroom guide and confirm the event plan with the relevant authority.

Construction uses a different basis

Do not use the event guest ratio for a job site. OSHA’s construction sanitation table specifies fixture minimums by worker count. Our construction rental page explains those brackets and the need to review servicing and washing facilities.

Use the planner, then confirm

The homepage planner shows its arithmetic and assumptions. It does not claim to account automatically for event length or drinks. Submit the output with your details for a reviewed recommendation.
